Hey lads! Australia is so vast that we have the feeling that every time we move on we get to a different country. From the tropical and hot state of Queensland , NW, we flew to the red centre, the desert with chili nights and warm days and from there we jumped to Tasmania, an island South of mainland Australia, only about 5,000 Km north of the freezing Antarctica!
That is it friends, we kept our summer clothes at the bottom of our backpacks as from now on we will have to cope with the Southern hemisphere winter!
Tasmania is an island of diverse wilderness, from never ending dune beaches to isolated rainforests, rugged mountains or lush alpine forests. It is a feast for your senses and with plenty jaw-dropping views and lookouts.
In a way it remembers us of our beloved Ireland, here it rains a hell, the fields are immaculately green, there are cliffs too and small villages scattered around with quiet or no pubs! Enough to make us realize we are far away from our second home…
The best and probably the only way to get to know Tasmania quite well is by car and we opted for a fantastic camper van which, taking advantage of the low season period, we got for an excellent deal. It proved to be a great decision as it is bloody cold here with the winter just around the corner and the night temperatures wondering around 0. We would not have survived one night in our tent!
Living in a camper van is handy and good fun. All our belongings and rooms are above four wheels and we have a kitchenette, fridge, microwave, sofa…We are quite squeezed in there, and moving around is like playing tetris! It is around 2m wide for 4m long, but, believe it or not, we even have 2 double beds! 3 cheers for the engineer who designed it!
With almost one quarter of the land comprised of wildlife national parks, Tasmania offers a wide selection of hikes, ranging from 20 minutes up to 10 days.
We have been doing a lot of driving stopping here and there, loads of barbecues as you always find public ones on your way, and of course hiking!
All was going well until the day we were descending the snow-covered Cradle Mt., one of the highest and most spectacular peaks of the Island. On the way down Nuria twisted her ankle pretty badly. Straight away it swelled significantly and she could barely walk. We went to the hospital and apparently she has a ligament torn apart, so far she is walking with a limp and as the doctor said, is time to rest… and see how evolves! For the last two days Nuria has been all quiet in the camper just walking a little bit while Jordi and Joan have been doing some more walks until today that we got back to the civilization; Hobart the island capital to get some more supplies and sort out a few things. We have 3 days left here and we will head off to the East coast looking for some more action! Ohhhh, by the way, Yes, we have seen the Tasmanian devil, it is not that scary…
All the best!
