Woh lads, our 5 days in the Australian outback have been fascinating, intense and emotional. The center of Australia its a very remote region, extremely arid, dry, harsh and with long distances between the main attractions.
After landing in Alice Springs, an isolated town in the middle of nowhere, we rented a car; American style, 4.000 c.c ford falcon familiar. A good choice in terms of space and comfort, bad choice in terms of petrol... With plenty supplies for 5 days, we headed south to the McDonnell Ranges. It was the beginning of our adventure, the two of us unknowing our destination, driving on ghost roads and getting dark...Great feelings though!
Eventually, we found the free camp site we were looking for, and there we enjoyed our first barbecue and night outdoors in the outback with the company of the dingos (Australian wild dogs), howling all night long! The temperatures drop down to 5 or less degrees in winter time, so it was a quite cold night to sleep outdoors. But hell, we lived and camped in Ireland!
The day after was so fulfilling, we did different hikes through spectacular gorges and chasms, we had the first impressions of how is the desert like! Just were missing two horses to play cowboys!
The distances in Australia are enormous, so we had to spend many hours on the roads, turning ourselves on the steering-wheel. Seldom you see a car, and when you do, they waved at you! The real danger comes from hitting a kangaroo or a wild camel. And the kings of the straight roads are the road trains, scary massive trucks up to 55 metres long.
After another night of free camping and 400 km, we got to ULURU, the world's biggest monolith, 3.6 km long and rising 348m from red sand dunes. Hey, no matter how many times you have seen it on pictures, the first glance you get at it, it is impressive, unique, awesome! Uluru presence is so powerful and inspiring, with plenty different shapes and colours. Depending on the light that illuminates the rock, it might look red, orange or ochre-brown. We did a 10 km walk around the circumference of Uluru, really worth it! and good to get rid of the crowds. However, we almost went mad because of the flies, no joking here! we had a whole army of them around us, kamikaze style ones! You can swallow, snort or get them inside your ears... we swear, they can really piss off the most patient and calm guy!
After one more night of outdoors camping, our final stop-over was Kings Canyon. Again, a superb natural wonder! we did a 6 km bushwalk loop throughout the canyon rim and got shocked with the 300m breath-taking views to the floor. The mixture of a dark blue sky with the red rocky path was captivating. All combined makes this hike as one of the most rewarding we have done so far!
To sum it up, after more than 1.800 km and five days contemplating and enjoying this dramatic scenario, we definitely rank it as the most spectacular landscape we have seen during our trip. The loneliness, the vast red desert, the rocky formations, camping outdoors for free, all has been amazing and made these days so special and unforgettable!
Yesterday, we arrived at Melbourne, where we met up with Joan, our big traveller companion! And tomorrow, we will fly to Tasmania looking for more adventures!!
Enjoy life!!

Ola parella!
